Description

The K&H Small Animal Heated Pad keeps guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, or other small animals warm in even the coldest conditions. Its 9" x 12" sleeping surface warms to an animal's natural body temperature while only using 25 watts.

To make the Small Animal Heated Pad stand up to everyday use, we implement several subtle yet thoughtful features:

  • The first 18 inches of the power cord and the cord entrance are steel-capped to prevent chewing.
  • The pad features rounded corners to make chewing more difficult.
  • For maximum protection, used the 4 pre-drilled corner holes to mount the pad to a floor, sidewall, or cage.

With an MET safety listing and a 1-year limited warranty, the K&H Small Animal Heated Pad also gives you peace of mind. Choose an optional deluxe cover for added comfort.

Important Safeguards:

  • Consult your veterinarian before use with young puppies/kittens, convalescent pets, during surgery/surgery recovery, or any animal that cannot voluntarily remove themselves from the heated pad. K&H recommends using ONLY the Deluxe Lectro-Kennel Heated Pad for these animals as this pad has an adjustable thermostat.
  • Do not place pad in confined area where the pet does not have the ability to remove themselves from the pad. Always allow your pet enough space to be able choose if they want to rest on the pad or off the pad.
  • This pad should never cover more than 50% of your pet's enclosure.

Care & Instructions

Usage Instructions

  1. Place the Small Animal Heated Pad directly on a hard, flat surface in your home or inside a shelter. The area chosen should be sheltered from direct rain or snow.
  2. Plug into 110-120 volt AC outlet. Allow 1-2 hours for the Small Animal Heated Pad to warm. The unit will feel slightly warm to the touch. When an animal lies on the pad, it will reach a maximum temperature of approximately 102°F. The built-in thermostat will automatically regulate the temperature.
  3. After initial warm-up, your Small Animal Heated Pad will feel cooler to the touch. This is the intention for energy efficiency. When your pet lies on the bed, it will warm to a comfortable temperature in even the coldest of weather.

Cleaning Instructions

  1. Wash the optional faux fleece cover on the gentle cycle with cold water, then line dry.
  2. The pad can be cleaned using a damp towel or sponge and mild dish washing detergent. DO NOT wash in a washing machine.

Testing Your Small Animal Heated Pad

You can test the pad by placing a large pillow on top of the pad. After about 20 minutes, feel under the pillow. It will feel warm, not hot. DO NOT use an extension cord during this test. DO NOT place anything on the pad (other than the fleece cover provided) any other time. This should only be done during testing.

Product Q&A

How do I attach this to a wall?

Simply drill 4 small holes, one in each corner of the Small Animal Heated Pad, making sure to drill only in the lip of the pad. Then screw the pad to the wall.

Could this be used in a Sterilite bin?

As long as the bin has a flat, stable surface on which the pad can rest, this is fine.

Could I place this in my hedgehog's cage? I use CareFresh bedding and wanted to know if the heater could be placed on or underneath it.

We would not recommend using this with CareFresh Natural Pet Bedding, which is made of reclaimed wood pulp. Straw, hay, and wood shavings are all very combustible materials and we would never advise using any of those materials in conjunction with any type of electrical or heated products. Please remember not to place anything on top of a K&H outdoor bed or pad other than the cover provided.

Do you have a larger size? My Bunny is a Flemish Giant (16 lbs at 8 months old). She has a long body.

You will want to look at our Lectro-Kennel heated pad. It heats to the same temperature, but there are a couple key differences to note when comparing it to the Small Animal Heated Pad:

  • The cord is steel-wrapped, but it does not have 18" of steel capping like the Small Animal Heated Pad. The cord would need to run through a PVC pipe or something similar for added protection from chewing.
  • The corners are not pre-drilled for floor mounting like the Small Animal Heated Pad. This is a simple fix as you can drill holes through the outer lip of the Lectro-Kennel and screw it down to the floor or onto the wall. This will deter your pet from picking the pad up like a chew toy.

What temperature will an outdoor heated bed or pad reach?

K&H outdoor beds and pads are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature of 102°F when he/she lies on the bed or pad. When your pet is not on the bed or pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

Are your heated beds and pads pressure sensitive?

Our beds and pads are NOT pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet.

K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

How long is the cord?

The cord is 5.5 feet long. The first 18 inches of the cord are steel-capped for added protection.

Can I use an extension cord with this product?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.

For more information on MET safety testing, please visit their website at www.metlabs.com.

How long can a heated bed or pad be plugged in?

MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards. For more information, please visit www.metlabs.com.

Is there an off/on switch?

There is not an off/on switch. The pad is always on when plugged in.

Is placing an additional blanket or towel on top of the heated bed or pad recommended?

You never want to place anything on top of a K&H outdoor bed or pad other than the cover provided. This cover allows the warmth to go through whereas a blanket or any other cover will trap the heat inside the bed or pad, possibly causing a malfunction.

Can you place an outdoor heated bed or pad on top of another pet bed or blanket for extra cushioning?

Outdoor heated pet beds and pads should be placed on a flat, stable surface rather than on top of a bed or blanket.

Are K&H outdoor heated beds and pads waterproof?

Our outdoor heated beds and pads are water-resistant. We understand that pets collect snow and water from being outdoors. Our products are designed to be used safely with pets, even when the pet is water-soaked.

Please make sure to place the bed or pad in a relatively dry area such as a covered porch, garage, kennel or dog house. The bed or pad should not be placed where there is a potential for standing water from heavy rain and the product should not be immersed in water.

Can I place an outdoor heated bed or pad on the ceiling of a shelter in order to offer heat from above?

Our heated beds require direct contact with an animal's body and do not provide radiant heat. For these reasons, we only recommend placing a heated bed or pad on the floor or sidewall where the animal’s body will come in direct contact with the product.

Is it safe to use this without the cover?

Yes, you can use K&H outdoor heated beds and pads with or without the included cover.

For a garage, would you advise an indoor or outdoor heated product?

For a garage, we recommend an outdoor heated product. They have the features necessary to ensure your pet stays warm in even the coldest of temperatures.
